These lovely wines incorporate Albariño & Mencía varieties as well as various of the lesser-known varietals–Caiño, Loureiro, Espadeiro, Treixadura, and Brancellao. We’ll enjoy a great visit and tasting before we continue on to our second-star producer for the day, Viños de Encostas. This vineyard is the personal project of Xose Luis Sebio, whose goal is to produce Galician wines of distinction and quality in a unique area where biodynamic production is challenging and conditions are unique. We’ll have a stellar tasting and lunch here. Well fed and ready for a rest, we’ll check into the magnificent Parador tucked into the mountains, where we will be spending the next two nights.
Day 3 - AUG 1ST
We’ll start our day with a drive to Rairos and visit the Adega Entre Cantos, a winery founded by Roberto Rodríguez who has returned to his home village after a career in gourmet foods. His biodynamic wines marketed under the name Martiñolo carry the influences of dense chestnut forests, mountains, rivers and memories of a childhood home. We will enjoy lunch in a charming country restaurant and then in the afternoon we’ll get on a boat and head down the picturesque Sil River while tasting more wine before returning to the hotel for a relaxing evening.
Day 4 - AUG 2ND
After checking out of the hotel we will leave the enchanting Sil Valley and head towards Santiago de Compostela. We’ll stop just outside the city and join the pilgrims walking the last stretch of the famous El Camino de Santiago into the center of Santiago, ending at the famous Cathedral. Upon completion of our journey, we’ll check into our boutique hotel located on Cathedral Square where El Camino ends. Hungry and ready for more, lunch will be a delightful tapas tour of old Santiago where we will learn the history of this storied city, tour the famous Cathedral and enjoy top notch tapas and wine. Late afternoon and evening will be free for more exploration on your own of this magnificent and historic city.
Day 5 - AUG 3TH
After checking out of our hotel, we will travel from Santiago to the village of Padrón, known for its delicious peppers. Your local host will give you the lay of the land, before we get back on the road and arrive at Adega Entre Os Rios in Caramiñal. This vineyard’s production of biodynamic wines, influenced by the granite rock and schist of the Barbanza massif and its seaside climate, is guided by a philosophy of respect for the natural environment of the region. We’ll have a great visit and tasting here with the winemaker and then enjoy a traditional lunch. We will then continue to our hotel in Cambados to check in and rest before driving to the seaside village of O Grove for one of the best seafood dinners of your life!
Day 6 - AUG 4TH
After breakfast, we’ll head straight to Bodega Albamar, the winery of Xurxo Alba located right next to his parent’s restaurant in Cambados. Xurxo is full of energy and has a clear mission to show us a new Galicia; without forgetting the tradition, but looking to the future with courage. Alba’s family has been making albariño for generations but only started commercial production in 2006. His family’s Finca O’Pereiro vineyard is located next to the sea where the Umía River joins the Atlantic growing where his grapes grow in a mixture of sand and clay. Xurxo will introduce us to his wines and then we’ll have lunch at his family’s restaurant. We’ll then head back to the hotel. We’ll have time for a siesta in the afternoon before attending the Albariño Festival of Cambados this evening. This annual event started in the 1950’s as a small dinner contest to choose the best local albariño and is now an internationally recognized week-long wine festival.
Day 7 - AUG 5TH
After all that great scenery, food, and wine, we’ll need a beach day! We will ferry out to the Islas Cies, an archipelago in the Vigo estuary, to spend a day on some of the most beautiful undeveloped beaches in the world. These islands are part of the maritime Natural Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia. We’ll say our goodbyes over a great farewell lunch, then head back to the hotel and the evening is at leisure.
